Our Bennett ancestor, William Bennett, immigrated to America from France in 1760. He initially settled in New Jersey. After the Revolutionary War and his marriage to Adria Ann Britton, he moved his family to Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. After a few years most of the family moved westward to Warren Co., Ohio. During the Revolutionary War, William bore the colors at Bunker Hill & Yorktown. He was seriously wounded at Bunker (Breeds) Hill. During his service in the military, he also served as one of Washington's body guards. William was an Ensign in Captain Simon Marston's company which was a part of Colonel Joshua Wingate's command. The regiment was the second organized in New Jersey in July 1776 . Little information on the lineage of William or Adria Ann is available. Reference books state that William was "from the vine covered hills of France" and that Adria Ann was "of Holland" and moved to America with her family. Any information the reader may have that would further this knowledge would be highly appreciated. The westward trek is interesting in that several Bennett families from Pennsylvania migrated to New Jersey and then on to Ohio in about the same time frame. We haven't established a relationship between these families. Most of the descendants of William and Adria Ann stayed in the mid-west or in Pennsylvania, with a branch that eventually settled in Utah.
