Jesse died at the age of 56 after an injury to his spinal column in a 'runaway accident.'
From the "Conservative," July 10, 1907: "DEATH OF JESSE BENNETT...The death of Jesse Bennett occurred last Tuesday, July 2, at his home near Aurora, resulting from an injury to the spinal column, being thrown from a vehicle ten days previously. Jesse Bennett was born in Green County, Ohio 56 years ago, where he spent his youth. In 1869, he was united in marriage with Miss Dorothy Anderson and soon removed west. For the past 29 years, he has lived in this county (Buchanan, Iowa) being at one time a resident of this city (Independence). Mr. Bennett is survived by his wife and 7 children; Mrs. Gilbert King; Will Bennett; Mrs. Sherman King, who reside in the immediate vicinity; besides Harry, Clara, George and Alice who live at home; also by two brothers, Samuel Bennett of Unionville, Missouri and M.L. Bennett of this city (Independence). The funeral services were held at the family home at 8;30 Thursday morning. The remains were laid at rest in the Brandon Cemetery."

All that medical skill and tenderest care could do was unable to withhold the hand of death, and the end came peacefully to the beloved father. Jesse Bennett was born in Green County, Ohio, 56 years ago, where he spent his youth. In 1869 he was united in marriage with Miss Dorothy Anderson and soon after removed west. For the past 29 years he has lived in this county, being at one time a resident of this city. [Independence] The deceased possessed a genial disposition, and his cheerfulness and innate sympathy for his fellow man were a power for good and were often emulated by acquaintances as well as friends. He will be missed in the community, but especially in the home as a good husband and a kind and indulgent father. Mr. Bennett is survived by his wife and 7 children: Mrs. Gilbert King, Will Bennett, Mrs. Sherman King, who reside in the immediate vicinity, besides Harry, Clara, George, and Alice, live at home; also by two brothers, Samuel Bennett of Unionville, Missouri, and M. L. Bennett of this city. The funeral services were held at the family home at 8:30 Thurs. morning. The remains were laid at rest in the Brandon cemetery.
