bullet  General Notes:

Notes from Katie Jablonicky:

July 1, 1896, The Conservative,"HAGEMAN..Harry Hageman, the 12 year old son of John Hageman, a blacksmith employed by M. S. Carver, was drowned while swimming at the 1st bend below town, hear Stevens abattoir, Monday afternoon. Fred Willey, a young man, had been swimming across the river, carrying smaller boys on his back. He was giving Hageman a similar trip, when the lad caught Willey's arms and they both went down 2 or 3 times. To save his own life, Willey was obliged to strike for the shore, and the little boy, unable to swim perished in the water. The alarm was given and many persons were soon at the scene. Volunteers began to search for the body, but it was not until 10 o'clock at night that it was found in deep water 15 or 20 feet from where it sank. The boy was a bright little fellow, and his sudden death is a sad blow to the family. It should serve as a warning to other boys and young men that they cannot be too careful while bathing in the river."
