Madison and his parents, John Henry Ferguson and Nancy Anderson Bunten-Ferguson, moved from Boone County, Indiana to Benton County, Iowa when he was one year old.
Madison and Mary ann were married in Iowa, and moved to Adair county, Missouri with their six sons in 1888. The seventh son, Paul Ethridge was born in Adair County.

Madison was a farmer, and raised grains and livestock.
His religion was Methodist, and his political party was the Socialist Party.
