General Notes:
Will of Lewis 5 Mulford of Elizabeth Town, 2/13/1826, proved 3/9/1830. [ I have a complete copy of this will.] Wife Mary; son AbrahamM.Mulford, co-executor with grandson Archibald Woodruff [s/o Parsons Woodruff]; "myfour daughters, viz. Mary, widow of Parsons Woodruff; Phebe, wife of Caleb Earl; Ann, wife of David Burrows; Mindwell, wife of David Jaques Junior; and my two granddaughters Phebe Clark and Mary Jaques, daughters of Hannah Clark decd." [Note: Hannah (Mulford) Clark's will was made 4/8/1817 and proved 7/7/1817.] Wit.: James Crane, Jonathan Harrison,Isaac Crane. Inventory 3/16/1830 by James Brown and William Brown, sworn to by A. M. Mulford, exor. 3/27/1830. I've gleaned the following items of information about Lewis Mulford from NJ records. I can't tell in every case which Lewis they refer to. Lewis Mulford, Jr. received a bequest from, and was was co-exor.ofthewill of, John Ogden 1700?-11/15/1780 of Elizabeth [will 6/6/1779, proved 12/10/1780; gs 47]. Ogden named Lewis' first wife Phebe as his granddaughter, but did not identify Phebe's parents. Joanne A. Mulford has supplied some of Phebe's ancestry in a chart in Mulfords of America 4:4. Lewis Mulford, Jr. wit. will of John Pierson of Elizabeth, 10/2/1772. Lewis Mulford (4 or 5?) wit. will of Samuel Olliver of Elizabeth, dated 4/9/1774, proved 1/6/1784. Lewis Mulford [5, since his father was dead by this time] was fellow bondsman for Benjamin Cory, Esq., his brother-in-law, who was admr. on estate of Aaron Thomson of Essex Co., 12/3/1793. Lewis Mulford wit. will of Gavin Scott of Union Twp., 6/10/1815.This is probably Lewis 5, since his father Lewis 4 was long dead and his son Lewis 6 had also died by this time. But it could be Lewis 6, s/o Benjamin 5. Lewis and his second wife are buried together in the 1st Pres.Church yard [gs 1341 & 1342]. His first wife Phebe's grave [gs 67] is flanked by those of three of her children who died young [gs 66,68]. Several ot her children also died young [gs 1335 & 1336]. Was Mary a Crane? (Possibility suggested by David Hudson). Perhaps the James and Isaac Crane who witnessed Lewis's will were Mary's brothers. I can't place her in my Stephen Crane descendants file, but by 1750 many lines in that file are incomplete. It's also entirely possible she was descended instead from Jasper Crane of Newark; I haven't looked into that line. Lewis 5 appears in the Jan. 1779 and Feb. 1780 tables of rat ables for Essex Co. (Elizabeth Town Ward). In 1779 he had 114 acres, 2 horses, and 9 cows; by 1780 he had added a horse, lost a cow, and had Ð846 at interest.
