John was listed in the Jan. 1779 table of ratables forEssexCo.(Elizabeth Town Ward) as a single man available for hire, withonehorse.In Feb. 1780 he was again listed as a single man, withoutthehorse.Thus, his marriage to Sarah Barton occurred after then-probably1780-83. He hardly appeared in any other public documentorrecord thatsurvives today, and is a shadowy man for one socomparativelyrecent inthis family narrative.
There is no known list of his children or record of when theywereborn,so my placement of Charity B. as his daughter is based onguesswork,aprocess of elimination, and circumstantial evidence. (SeenotesunderJohn's wife, Sarah Barton.)
I believe Townley Mulford was John's son. Why else would hehavebeenappointed to administer on John's estate while John's widowandthreeolder brothers were still living within a mile? (TheClevelandGenealogy,without explaining or citing any evidence, callsTownleyMulford a son ofJohn's brother Benjamin 5. But I'm very reluctanttoaccept thisunsupported claim, which may have arisen from the mentionofTownley inBenjamin's 1830 pension application. The pensionapplicationdidn'tidentify the relationship between Townley and Benjamin,so anyassumptionabout that relationship needs support from some othersource.)Townleywas born in 1783, and that's why I think John and Sarahweremarriedbefore then.
