In a letter dated Sept. 26, 1871, Gallipolis, Ohio: "Hon. I. H. Baker : Sir, this morning I received your communication of the 20th ins. inquiring a better statement in Ezekiel Mulford claim for pension. I immediately sent for the poor blind man and questioned him relative to his service in the W ar of 1812, when the old man informed me that he resided in Scioto County in the State of Ohio and was drafted to serv e six months, and served under Capt. Hoskin in a Regiment commanded by Col. McDonald , Ohio Mili tia. Drafted on about the 20th day of Jan. 1815 was discharged on or about the April 20, 1815 at Upper Sandusky, Ohio. MY ANCESTOR IN THE WAR OF 1812 Ezekiel Mulford , my great grandfather was born in Wayne Co., Penn. in 1788. He was the son of Abraham and Hannah Mulford. The family lived in Upper Smithfield twp. which later became a part of the present Pike Co. In Apr 1808 he was married to Sally Cook at Milford, Penn. They came at once to Cheshire, Callia Co., Ohio (later Meigs Co.). In 1815 we find them in Scioto County in an area now a partof Pike Co., OH. It was from this place that he was drafted on Jan 20, 1815 for a term of six months. He served under Capt. Caleb Hoskins . This company was organized at Chillicothe, Ohio. They then proceeded to Dayton, where it became a part of Col. McDonald 's Regiment of the Ohio Militia, thence on to Detroit. He was discharged Apr 1, 1815 at Detroit or perhaps Upper Sandusky. He then moved toMason County, VA. (now W.Va.) and we find him on the f irst tax duplicate in 1817. He was taxed for one thighable and one horse. It is interesting to note that there were only a few families listed and very few horses, as they were taxed at 25 cts. per head. Oxen were not taxed. The family lived at this location until 1830, when they returned to Cheshire, the village they had come to as bride and groom in 1808. Of his wife, Sally, we hav e meager information, but we do know she was of the Friends faith, and that according to family legend she always wore her white apron and cap. Note: The above was read to the Lucas Sulliv ant Chapter National Society of the Daughters of 1812, by Hortense Fowler Howell in 1961.
Ezekiel married Sarah Cook on 8 Apr 1808 in Milford, Pike, Pennsylvania. (Sarah Cook was born in 1789 in , , New Jersey and died after 1850.)
