Madam: Your communication of October 4th to the Chamber ofCommerceofLockport with reference to family geneology has been referredto me,aDirector of the Lockport Historical Society, for answer. I recall very well Mr. Moses S. Hunting, yourmaternalgrandfather. When I commenced the study of the law in Lockport in1885. Hewas one ofthe older members of the Bar, quite a fine lookingoldgentleman withwhite curly hair, who was still very vehement inhisaddresses to thejury, quoting Shakespeare and the classics andwaivinghis arms andgesticulating in the manner of the advocate of thatday - aschool thatwas passing away. He must have been an excellentlawyer inhis time.Associated with him in business was his son, BenjaminJ. Hunting- also atrial lawyer who was District Attorney of the CountyofNiagara1877-1880. In the files of the Niagara County Clerk's Office are foundthecensusreports for this city as of June 1, 1865. On Page eight ofthevolume ofthat report appears the following: Moses S. Hunting, Lawyer, age 47 Josephine " wife age 40 Matilda " child age 19 Benjamin " child age 17 Fred " child age 15 Cornelia " child age 10 It also appears from the records that Moses S Hunting andJosephineG.his wife conveyed various pieces of land so that you canestablishanotherpoint of identification here with your grandmother - theG. inher nameundoubtedly standing for "Goodwin". .......I am told, although I have not yet verified thefact, thatthe Hunting burial lot is in Glenwood Cemetery in this city.... Moses S. Hunting and his son, Benjamin J. died many years agoandIpresume Mrs. Hunting also died because when I knew Moses S.Huntinghewas a widower. I also recall that my aunt who was principalofanIntermediate School in this city for something like over fiftyyearswasvery fond of a particularly bright and beautiful girl whoattendedherschool known as "Cornie" Hunting, who must have been theCorneliawhoappears in the census report. She died a school girl. ....the Hunting name does not appear in the (Lockport)directoryof1859 and 1860.
October 13th, 1933 Madam: ....I have learned that the markers on the Hunting lotinGlenwoodCemetery contain the following inscriptions: Moses S. Hunting, born 1814 died 1885 Mattie Reynolds died 1885 age 38 Cornie Hunting died 1873 age 17 Benjamin Hunting died 1886 age 36 These dates correspond with the Census report except that whatIreadas "47" should have been "41". Hunting in theBiographicalandPortrait Cyc. of Niagara County published in 1892. It stated that he was the son of Edward and Margaret(Kruver)Huntingand was born in Ulster County, N.Y.
