******* Hunting genealogy web as a repository for genealogies, source material, web sites, and bibliography information http://www.cs.cornell.edu/dean/hunting.htm ******* Date: 1/21/99 12:18:41 PM Central Standard Time From: dean@cs.cornell.edu (Dean B. Krafft) I believe that I've identified the Dr. Edward Hunting who wasthefatherof Edward Hunting, born 1778 in Ulster Co., NY. The key is a booktitled"East Hampton History, Including Genealogies of Early Families" by Jeannette Edwards Rattray, Country Life Press, Garden City, NY, 1953. Inparticular, in Chapter 12 "From Purge to Penicillin" she describes the history of medical practice in the town. On the bottom of page 85 and top ofpage86is the following paragraph:
"Edward Huntting, the second son of Rev. Nathaniel Huntting, wasagraduate of Harvard in 1725, and is mentioned in the Town Records asDr.Huntting,as is his son Edward who was born in 1741. The first Dr. Edward diedattheage of 40, and his son removed to Fishkill, N.Y., and it is doubtful ifheever practiced in East Hampton."
Fishkill, NY in Dutchess County is a stone's throw (if you have a really strong arm) from Ulster County. In the section on genealogies (p. 398)she lists the following (note that numbers are generations with John Hunting/Hester Seaborne being 1):
"Dr. Edward [Huntting] 4 [son of Rev. Nathaniel Huntting b. Nov 15, 1675, Dedham, MA] b. 1704, d. April 1745, a graduate of Harvard and aphysician, he m. Dec. 16, 1730, Mercy, dau. Isaac Mulford; ch. Mercy 5, b.1731(whom. Thomas Wickham;) Isaac Mulford 5 b. Nov. 17, 1732, d. Feb 3,1812*;Edward5 b. 1733, d. 1738; Mehitable 5 b. 1739, (who m. E. Jones;) Edward 5againb. 1741; Mary 5 b. 1743.
*Isaac Mulford 5 was 1st Lieut. of 2nd. Company, 3rd. Regt. ofMinuteMenin 1776; he m. Ruth Stratton and rem. to Dutchess Co., N.Y. 1783;hisdau.Ruth m. Jeremiah Sherrill and they also rem. to Dutchess Co. Edward 5 rem. to Fishkill, N.Y. 1783."
If these dates are correct, then Dr. Edward Hunting, Jr. would havebeen37 when your Edward was born in 1778.
As further evidence, both the 1790 and 1800 Federal Censuses of New York list exactly one Edward Hunting - in the Town of Fishkill, DutchessCo.For the 1790 census, the transcription at http://www.ancestry.com lists 1free white male 16 or older, 1 free white female, and 5 other free persons.
I don't know how well this fits with the rest of your evidence, butunless there were two Dr. Edward Huntings living within 50 miles of each other, this seems like a very high probability match. Potential ways toconfirmit would include finding a will for Dr. Edward Hunting, Jr. inDutchessCounty probate records or tracking down the wills of his aunts and unclestoseeif they have any mention of him. A check for town histories of Fishkillmight also lead to something (I'll check the Cornell Library when I can getback over to it). *******
Date: 1/21/99 4:05:46 PM Central Standard Time From: dean@cs.cornell.edu (Dean B. Krafft) Well, I did make it to the library and I took a pass through the bookson Fishkill and Dutchess County. The only useful item wasthefollowing, which confirms that the Edward Hunting in Fishkill in 1797 was indeed a doctor.
From "Settlers of the Beekman Patent, Dutchess County, New York, An Historical and Genealogical Study of all the 18th Century Settlers in the Patent" by Frank J. Doherty, Pleasant Valley, New York 12569,1990.,p.132: "The 'Poughkeepsie Journal' of 25 Jan. 1797 carried a notice thataMedical Society was to meet in Fishkill on Wednesday, 1st March 1797. The paper of 8 March carried the following: 'At a meeting of a number of physicians in the town of Fishkill on the 1st instant (in pursuance of a public request) it was agreed to institute a Medical Society tocomprehend the county of Dutchess. The following persons were chosen a committee to originate a Constitution and by-laws. Ebenezer Cary, John Thomas,Shadrack Ricketson, James L. Van Kleeck, Dr. Weeks, Edward Hunting,HiramWalker,Dr. Farrington, Henry Van Kleeck, Abraham Halsey and Dr. Bryan." ******* Dutchess County was formed in 1683, one of the original countiesofNewYork. Almost uninhabited until 1701, Dutchess County wasadministeredbyUlster County from that time until at least 1713. DutchessCountyislocated in the Southeast corner of New York. It is bounded onthenorthby Columbia Co., NY, on the east by Litchfield Co., CT andFairfieldCo.,MA, on the south by Putnam Co., NY, and on the west byUlster andOrangeCounties, NY. ****** Sources: 1.
